Population Description

These cell lines and DNA samples were prepared from blood samples collected from southern Han Chinese individuals living in the Hu Nan and Fu Jian Provinces of South China who identified themselves as having at least three out of four Han Chinese grandparents.

Referring to Populations

It is important to include a reference to “Southern China" when describing the source of these samples. Participants were not necessarily chosen to be representative of all Han Chinese people, nor of all people in China, where there are 56 officially recognized ethnicities. The population should not be described merely as "Asian" or as "East Asian" as these terms encompass many populations whose ancestors came from places other than China.

The full population descriptor is Han Chinese South, China. The shorthand label is Southern Han Chinese and the abbreviation is CHS.

It may be scientifically appropriate to pool data from these samples with data from other ancestrally related groups, when the data show that the groups have similar allele frequencies. If the groups all have East Asian ancestry, the recommended designation is "East Asian Ancestry" (abbreviation: EAA) to describe the combined analysis panel. Another abbreviation may need to be used if only groups very closely related to the Han Chinese have similar allele frequencies.

Additional guidance about how to refer to the populations can be found at Guidelines for Referring to the Populations in Publications and Presentations.
