REQUIREMENTS

DNA samples are distributed only to qualified professional persons who are associated with recognized research, medical, educational, or industrial organizations engaged in health-related research or health delivery. There are two requirements for ordering biomaterials from the NEI-AREDS Genetic Repository to ensure compliance with the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) regulations for the protection of human subjects (45 CFR Part 46):

  1. An ASSURANCE FORM detailing the terms and conditions of sale must be signed by the Principal Investigator and the Institutional Official who can make legal commitments on behalf of the institution.
  2. A STATEMENT OF RESEARCH INTENT with a description of the research to be done with the DNA samples must be provided to the Repository.

Each order must be placed electronically using the online catalog system. The STATEMENT OF RESEARCH INTENT can be completed and submitted electronically during checkout. If not already on-file, the ASSURANCE FORM must be completed and submitted by fax, mail, or email before an order can be reviewed and approved. This form can be downloaded during the checkout process or may be obtained by contacting Customer Service (see below). Note that if the samples will be used for a single purpose collaboration, the ASSURANCE FORM and STATEMENT OF RESEARCH INTENT must be submitted both by the Principal Investigator (electronically) placing the order as well as all collaborating Principal Investigators (paper).

PROCEDURE

All orders for DNA samples must be submitted using the online catalog. Customers must register online and have their registration approved. Customers can add items to their shopping cart from the catalog or alternatively, can paste a list of the catalog numbers into a quick order (quick order is available after logging in to the "My Account Manager" page). See first order for more information about registering and ordering online. Before requests can be processed, the required information and supporting documentation must be reviewed and approved by the Coriell Order Review Board. If an investigator wishes to order items that do not appear in the catalog, they are requested to contact the Coriell Cell Repositories before placing the order (see contact information below).

Note that a purchase order number or credit card number must be provided during checkout before an order can be processed. If ordering specimens as an NEI or NIH grantee, please provide NEI or NIH grant number during the checkout process (see step #6 of check-out and the accompanying text box). The standard shipping aliquot in 10 µg; if the smaller 5 µg aliquot is requested, please enter this request in the textbox at checkout.

SHIPMENT OF DNA SAMPLES

DNA samples are recovered from storage at -70C and shipped on Mondays and Wednesdays at ambient temperature. Recipients should centrifuge the vials prior to opening. Continued storage at -70C is recommended to maintain the integrity of the DNA. All DNA samples prepared by the Repository are characterized for the following:

  1. OD260/OD280 ratio
  2. Protein concentration
  3. Agarose gel electrophoresis to confirm the integrity and digestibility with Eco R1 and Hind III
  4. Microsatellite analysis to confirm identity

DESCRIPTIVE DATA

Each shipment includes a packing slip and a listing of DNA concentrations. Specific details for each DNA sample and pertinent reference citations (if available) can be printed from the Coriell Web Catalog. Search the catalog by using the catalog number.

Our mission is to prevent and cure disease through biomedical research.
