Data from AREDS2 is publicly available in the Database of Genotypes and Phenotypes (dbGaP).

AREDS2 phenotype data and genetic data are available in the dbGaP.

The AREDS2 phenotype data has 6 groups of data tables:

  • AREDS2 Main Study (28 tables)
    • Dataset with consent group and participant mapping to other studies with dbGaP data (1 table: AREDS2_Subject)
    • Datasets with phenotype data (27 tables)
  • AREDS2 Cardiovascular Ancillary Study (4 tables: AREDS2_CAD, AREDS2_COR, AREDS2_DAD, AREDS2_SAD)
  • AREDS2 Nutritional Biochemistry Study (1 table: AREDS2_CDC)
  • AREDS2 Cognitive Function Ancillary Study (2 tables: AREDS2_CTI, AREDS2_CTS)
  • AREDS2 Genetic Ancillary Study (4 tables: AREDS2_GIC, AREDS2_Sample_ID, AREDS2_Sample_Attributes, AREDS2_Pedigree)
  • OPERA Ancillary Study (2 tables: AREDS2_OPR_LE, AREDS2_OPR_RE)

A detailed AREDS2 dbGaP Dataset Guide that provides additional details about the AREDS2 phenotype data in the dbGaP is also available. It is recommended that all researchers using the AREDS2 phenotype data make use of this Dataset Guide. Also note that the AREDS2 study protocol for the Main Study as well as for the ancillary studies are available under the Documents tab of the dbGaP.

Each data table in the dbGaP is divided into 2 consent groups:

  • General Research Use (GRU-IRB-PUB):
    • Data from these participants can be used for any kind of research
  • Disease-Specific (Eye Disease) (DS-ED-IRB-PUB):
    • Data from these participants can only be used for eye disease research

The AREDS2 genetic data currently includes 2 types of data:

  • Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP)/Copy Number Variation (CNV) Genotypes Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS): 27 DS-ED-IRB-PB participants, 1336 GRU-IRB-PUB participants
  • Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS): 27 DS-ED-IRB-PB participants, 1336 GRU-IRB-PUB participants

Submitting Genotype Data Obtained from AREDS2 DNA to the dbGaP

In order to enhance the value of the dbGaP to the scientific research community, researchers who genotype AREDS2 DNA are encouraged to submit their data to the dbGaP once their results have been published. For information about how to submit these data to the dbGaP, please contact:
