Shared Samples
The 1000 Genomes Project shares some samples with the International HapMap Collection. The Family Relationships listed above includes those samples that were also part of the HapMap Project which can be found here.
Population Description
These cell lines and DNA samples were prepared from blood samples collected from people living in a small town near Florence in the Tuscany region of Italy. All of the samples are from unrelated individuals who identified themselves as having at least three out of four Toscani grandparents.
Referring to Populations
It is important to refer to this community as "Toscani in Italia" when describing these samples in articles or presentations. Including the full name reinforces the point that the sample set does not represent all Toscani, nor all Italians, whose population history is complex. The population should not be described merely as "Italian", "Southern European", "European", or "Caucasian", since each of those designators encompasses many communities. Reference to these samples in the Italian language is preferred.
The full population descriptor is Toscani in Italia and the abbreviation is TSI.
Members of the community where these samples were drawn developed a written statement that expresses their views about genetic variation research and their hopes about how their samples will be used.
