Shared Samples
The 1000 Genomes Project shares some samples with the International HapMap Collection. The Family Relationships listed above includes those samples that were also part of the HapMap Project which can be found here.
Population Description
These cell lines and DNA samples were prepared from blood samples collected from people living in the Tokyo metropolitan area. All of the samples are from unrelated individuals.
Since it is considered culturally insensitive in Japan to inquire specifically about a person's ancestral origins, prospective donors were simply told that the general aim was to include samples from people whose grandparents were all from Japan. The samples were collected from people who lived in (or whose ancestors presumably came from) many different parts of Japan.
Referring to Populations
It is important to refer to this community as "Japanese in Tokyo, Japan" when describing these samples in articles or presentations. The population should not be described merely as "Asian" or as "East Asian", terms that encompass many communities.
The full population descriptor is Japanese in Tokyo, Japan and the abbreviation is JPT.
