Potential Ethical Issues Associated with the Creation and Use of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) Lines Derived from NHGRI-Supported Sample Collections

02/2024

Included below is a new report entitled ‘NHGRI Meeting on: Ethical Issues Associated with the Creation and Use of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (iPSC) Lines Derived from NHGRI-Supported Sample Collections’.

Induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPSCs, are cells that can be derived from blood and transformed into many other types of cells found in the body. This new report summarizes the results of a meeting that took place in 2021 where experts in iPSCs, genomics, and ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) came together to discuss how to best ensure iPSC lines developed from diverse sample collections are available for research, aspects of the patient and participant consent process that are needed to allow samples to be made into iPSC lines, limits on the research use of such iPSC lines, and considerations for consent processes and oversight structures for these efforts in the future.
