FAQ: Coriell Institute and COVID-19

03/2020

In addition to the threats posed to human health, COVID19 has to potential to disrupt business operations if companies do not have a robust emergency plan in place. The Coriell Institute for Medical Research has a multilayered emergency plan that has been honed, revisited and updated over time. We are monitoring the outbreak and following guidance from the CDC, OSHA, and local and state health officials to limit the exposure of our staff. Protocols are in place to prevent the transmission, maintain business operations, and minimize the potential adverse effects in the event the outbreak becomes more widespread.

In the event of a closure at the institution, we will strive to maintain a skeleton staff to meet contract deliverables, though some delay may be unavoidable depending on how wide the impacts of this virus are. During a closure, customers may experience a delay in the fulfillment of their orders. We are committed to returning to normal order as quickly and safely as possible and will do everything in our power to limit the disruption this may cause.

Is the Coriell Institute for Medical Research still operating?

Yes. While cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in our region, Coriell remains open and operational. All laboratory production and sample distribution will continue for the time being.

Cancellations due to the coronavirus pandemic:

If you have ordered DNA or frozen cell cultures (e.g. iPSCs), it should be possible to cancel or postpone your order. However, if your order includes live cell cultures, we may not be able to cancel or provide a refund for your order. If you have questions or concerns about a shipment, please contact customerservice@coriell.org.

What if the situation near Coriell worsens?

We are closely monitoring the spread of COVID-19 and its impact to our region and business operations. We have plans in place should Coriell have to reduce or even briefly suspend operations. We are committed to ensuring the continuity of the world class service we provide our customers, but the health and safety of our staff and our community is a top priority at this time and we have a responsibility to help prevent the spread of the disease.

We hope we do not have to take steps for suspending operations, but if we do, all information relevant to our customers will be communicated in a timely manner.

To our customers and collaborators, thank you for your understanding. This is a difficult time for many around the world and we will continue to do all that we can to meet the needs of the scientists who rely on us.
